Etymology: < French †akanticone ( R. J. Haüy Traité de minéralogie (1801) III. 102; 1800 as †akanthikone (B. J. d'Andrada, in Jrnl. de physique 51 240); 1805 or earlier as †acanticone, 1811 or earlier as †acanthicone) < ancient Greek ἀκανθίς goldfinch ( < ἄκανθα thorn (see acanthus n., so called as it lives among thorns) + -ίς -id suffix²) + κονία powder (see conite n.), so called as the colour of the powdered mineral is yellow. Compare German †Acanticone, †Akanthicone (both 1801 or earlier), †Akantikone (1804 or earlier).In forms with medial -th- in French, German, and English probably by association with acanthus n. and its French and German parallels.

Mineralogy. Obsolete.

A mineral now regarded as a form of epidote.
