Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek παρακμαστικός ( < ancient Greek παρακμάζειν to be past the prime ( < Hellenistic Greek παρακμή paracme n.) + -τικός, suffix forming adjectives from verbs) + -al suffix¹. Compare Middle French, French paracmastique (late 16th cent. in Paré).Compare also as an earlier unassimilated ancient Greek loan:1583 P.
