In later use (in β. forms) classical Latin paracentēsis the operation of couching a cataract < Hellenistic Greek παρακέντησις tapping for dropsy, couching a cataract < ancient Greek παρα- para- prefix¹ + κέντησις pricking ( < κεντεῖν to prick, stab ( < the same base as κέντρον : see centre n.¹) + -σις -sis suffix), after Hellenistic Greek παρακεντεῖν to pierce at the side, to tap for dropsy, to couch a cataract.
