释义

paracentesisn.

Brit. /ˌparəsɛnˈtiːsɪs/, U.S. /ˈˌpɛrəsɛnˈtisᵻs/
Inflections: Plural paracenteses.
Forms:

α. 1500s paracentese.

β. 1600s paracentisis (irregular), 1600s–1700s paracenthesis (irregular), 1600s– paracentesis.

Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Perhaps partly a borrowing from French. Or perhaps partly a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Latin paracentēsis; French paracentese; Dutch paracentese.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) either < Middle French paracentese (1575; French paracentèse ) or Dutch paracentese (1598 in the passage translated in quot. 1598), both < classical Latin paracentēsis (see below). In later use (in β. forms) classical Latin paracentēsis the operation of couching a cataract < Hellenistic Greek παρακέντησις tapping for dropsy, couching a cataract < ancient Greek παρα- para- prefix1 + κέντησις pricking ( < κεντεῖν to prick, stab ( < the same base as κέντρον : see centre n.1) + -σις -sis suffix), after Hellenistic Greek παρακεντεῖν to pierce at the side, to tap for dropsy, to couch a cataract.
