Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin panthērīnus.
Etymology: < classical Latin panthērīnus of a leopard or similar animal, having markings typical of such an animal < panthēra panther n. + -īnus -ine suffix1. Compare Middle French panthérin (1562).With English pantherine tables (see quot. 1753) compare classical Latin panthērīnae mēnsae (Pliny; compare mensa n.).
Resembling or characteristic of a panther; dark or spotted like a panther; powerful, lithe, graceful.
