Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pan- comb. form, theist n.1
Etymology: < pan- comb. form + theist n.1 Compare French panthéiste (1712 as noun, 1829 as adjective). Compare earlier atheist n., polytheist n., etc. With use as adjective compare earlier pantheistic adj.Apparently the noun was first used by Toland (see quot. 1877 at pantheize v.) after encountering post-classical Latin pantheos used in a similar sense by Joseph Raphson (1697 in De spatio reali).
