Etymology: < the name of Pantagruel (see Pantagruelian adj.) + -ism suffix, after French Pantagruélisme (1535 in Middle French in Rabelais as Pantagruelisme).Sense 2 seems to have arisen from a misunderstanding of quot. 1835 at sense 1.
1. The philosophy and practice ascribed to Pantagruel; extravagant and coarse humour with a satirical purpose. Also, more generally: coarseness, vulgarity.
