A member of the earliest prehistoric people thought to have inhabited the Arctic from Greenland to Siberia, from whom the Inuit and related peoples are ultimately descended. Also occasionally: the culture of the Palaeo-Eskimos.In some sources an intermediate people or culture called neo-Eskimo is distinguished: cf. quot. 1956 at Thule n. 2.
