单词 palaechinoid
释义

palaechinoidn.adj.

Brit. /palᵻˈkʌɪnɔɪd/, /peɪlᵻˈkʌɪnɔɪd/, /palˈɛkᵻnɔɪd/, /peɪlˈɛkᵻnɔɪd/, U.S. /peɪlˈɛkəˌnɔɪd/, /pælˈɛkəˌnɔɪd/, /peɪliˈkaɪˌnɔɪd/, /pæliˈkaɪˌnɔɪd/
Forms: 1800s palechinoid, 1800s– palaechinoid, 1800s– palaeechinoid.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Palaechinoidea.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Palaechinoidea, subclass name (given as a synonym of the subclass name Palechinida in Haeckel Gen. Morphol. der Organismen (1866) II. p. lxxi) < palaeo- palaeo- comb. form + Echinoidea , class name (see echinoid adj. and n.), with coalescence of the vowels. With later use compare scientific Latin Palechinus, Palaechinus, Palaeechinus, genus name (see note). The name Palechinus was reported in Jrnl. Geol. Soc. Dublin (1840) 2 99 as having been coined by J. Scouler, but its taxonomic validity as a genus name derives from its publication in F. M'Coy Synopsis of Characters of Carboniferous Limestone Fossils of Ireland (1844) 171, where it appears in the text as Palæchinus (though the accompanying plate caption reads Palechinus). By the rules of zoological nomenclature, this is now spelt Palaechinus. The form Palæechinus (or Palaeechinus), attributed to Lovén (1874), was preferred by some authors on philological grounds, but being a later emendation it is not taxonomically valid. N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pælikəi·noid) /pæliːˈkaɪnɔɪd/.
