Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin palaceus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin palaceus having a spade-like form (in the source of quot. 1832; < classical Latin pāla spade (see pala n.2) + -āceus : see -aceous suffix) + -ous suffix.
Botany. rare. disused.
Of a leaf: having a spade-like form, owing to the edge being decurrent on the petiole.Marked by Lindley with an obelisk as among ‘those terms which are seldom used’.
