Origin: A borrowing from Chinese. Etymon: Chinese baahk tùhng.

Etymology: < Chinese (Cantonese) baahk tùhng (Meyer-Wempe transcription paâk t'ūng) white copper < baahk white + tùhng copper.The form packfong originates in a scribal or typographical error, and has passed from Ure's Dict. Arts (see quot. 1839) into various other works. The form placfont is perhaps a further corruption of this.

A silver-coloured cupro-nickel alloy, either the Chinese alloy paitung (paitung n.), or a European imitation of this, used esp. in the manufacture of 18th-cent. fireplace furniture.
