Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Kapampangan. Probably partly from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: Spanish pampango ; Kapampangan kapampangan ; proper name Pampanga , -an suffix.
Etymology: In α. forms < Spanish pampango, adjective (1580 or earlier; feminine pampanga , 1571 or earlier in the name of the river and province) < Kapampangan pampang riverbank. In β. forms probably originally shortened < Kapampangan kapampangan, self-designation and name of a river and province (see Kapampangan n. and adj.); later probably < the name of the Pampanga river and province in central Luzon Island + -an suffix.The synonym Pampangueño ( < Spanish) is also found in English contexts.
