Origin: Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Probably imitative. Compare West Frisian pampe to cram, Dutch pampen (only in compounds as pampzak glutton, obese person (early 17th cent. or earlier), samenpampen to squeeze together (1661 in an isolated attestation), and slampampen to glut, cram, eat and drink noisily and greedily (1532)), Middle Low German pampen to pound in a mortar (early 17th cent.; German regional (Low German) pampen to crush, pound, stuff oneself, sik vull pampen to stuff oneself), German (regional and colloquial) (southern) bampfen , (central) pampen , (central and southern) pampfen to cram, gobble, eat (too) greedily, (Bavarian) sich voll pampfen to stuff oneself, Norwegian regional pampa to cram, Norwegian (Bokmål, colloquial) pampet having eaten enough, full, Swedish regional pampen swollen up, and also Lithuanian pampti to swell, become bloated, although the relationships between these words are uncertain, and it is possible that the word may have arisen independently in more than one language. Compare pamper v., pomp v.2, and perhaps also pap v.1
