Etymology: Apparently < pac- (in Pacific adj.²) + -li- (apparently an arbitrary element) + -taxel (perhaps an alteration of taxol n., or perhaps directly < scientific Latin Taxus, genus name, with an arbitrary ending), in allusion to the Pacific yew, Taxus brevifolia.

Pharmacology.

A taxane originally isolated from the bark of the Pacific yew, Taxus brevifolia, which interferes with microtubule function and inhibits cell division, and is used in the treatment of some cancers, esp. those of the breast and ovary.A proprietary name for this drug is Taxol.
