Etymology: < Japanese oyakata boss, overseer, sumo stablemaster (10th cent., originally denoting a person who must be respected like a parent; 1604 as voyacata in the supplement to Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam in sense ‘elder brother, person in whose charge someone is kept’) < oya parent + -kata , suffix denoting person in charge ( < kata direction, side, (in honorific use) lady, gentleman). Compare oyabun n.In quot. 1818 (with the form oyagoda) via Russian.
In Japan: a master, a boss; (Sumo) the master of a wrestling stable. Also as a form of address.
