Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ὀξύρρυγχος.
Etymology: < ancient or Hellenistic Greek ὀξύρρυγχος a sharp-snouted Egyptian fish, use as noun of ancient Greek ὀξύρρυγχος sharp-snouted < ὀξυ- oxy- comb. form1 + ῥύγχος snout, beak (see -rhynchous comb. form). In sense 2 after scientific Latin Oxyrhynchus, emended form of Oxyruncus , genus name (Temminck 1820). Compare French oxyrhynque (dated 1791 in sense 1 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)).
Zoology.
1. A fish with a pointed snout; spec. Mormyrus kannume (formerly M. oxyrhynchus) (family Mormyridae) of the River Nile, venerated by the ancient Egyptians. Now rare.

1851 Museum Nat. Hist. II. 152 The oxyrhinchus is very commonly represented in the paintings of Thebes, Beni-Hassan and Memphis.

2. A genus of perching birds (now called Oxyruncus), whose sole member is the sharpbill, O. cristatus. Obsolete.The sharpbill has been traditionally placed in the monotypic family Oxyruncidae, but it is now sometimes regarded as a cotinga.
