Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ὀξύρρυγχος.

Etymology: < ancient or Hellenistic Greek ὀξύρρυγχος a sharp-snouted Egyptian fish, use as noun of ancient Greek ὀξύρρυγχος sharp-snouted < ὀξυ- oxy- comb. form¹ + ῥύγχος snout, beak (see -rhynchous comb. form). In sense 2 after scientific Latin Oxyrhynchus, emended form of Oxyruncus , genus name (Temminck 1820). Compare French oxyrhynque (dated 1791 in sense 1 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)).

Zoology.

1. A fish with a pointed snout; spec. Mormyrus kannume (formerly M. oxyrhynchus) (family Mormyridae) of the River Nile, venerated by the ancient Egyptians. Now rare.
