Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin oxyrhynchus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin oxyrhynchus (see oxyrhynchus n.). In sense 1 after scientific Latin Oxyrhynchi (1839 or earlier), name of a division of Brachyura (later the section Oxyrhyncha); compare French oxyrhynque, in the same sense (attributed to P. A. Latreille by H. Milne-Edwards Hist. nat. crustacés (1834) I. ii. iii. 266).In the following quot. the fish of the Nile (sense 2) has been confused with the marine crab (sense 1):1975 A. Landsburg & S. Landsburg Outer Space Connection Isis..recovered every piece of the precious fragments [of Osiris], save for the phallus, which had been devoured by a Nile crab, oxyrhynch, which Egyptians forever curse for this crime.
