Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Acanthopterygii.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Acanthopterygii, plural noun ( P. Artedi Ichthyologia (1738) 86) < acantho- acantho- comb. form + -pterygii (see -pterygian comb. form).
Zoology.
With plural agreement. A class (or subclass) of bony fishes comprising the ray-finned fishes, characterized by having hard and spiny rays in the dorsal fins.
