Etymology: < over- prefix + think v.2 With sense 1 compare to think over (see think v.2 3a); with sense 2 compare underthink v. 1. Compare Middle Dutch overdenken (Dutch overdenken ), Middle High German überdenken (German überdenken ), Old Swedish ivirthänkia (Swedish övertänka ), Danish overtænke , all in sense 1.The word apparently became obsolete at the end of the Old English period and was re-formed in the late 15th cent.
