单词 oxymel
释义

oxymeln.

Brit. /ˈɒksᵻmɛl/, U.S. /ˈɑksiˌmɛl/
Forms: Old English oxumelle, Old English oxumelli, Old English oxumellis, Middle English oxennell (in a late copy), Middle English oximelle, Middle English oxmell, Middle English 1600s oximel, Middle English 1600s– oxymel, Middle English–1500s oximell, 1600s oxymell.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin oxymel, oxymeli.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin oxymel, oxymelle (5th cent.), variants (after classical Latin mell- , mel honey: see mell n.2) of classical Latin oxymeli mixture of vinegar and honey < ancient Greek ὀξύμελι < ὀξυ- oxy- comb. form1 + μέλι honey (see mell n.2). Compare Old French, Middle French, French oxymel (c1268 as oximel). The Old English form oxumellis is apparently after the Latin genitive singular. The word was evidently reborrowed in the 14th cent.; there is unlikely to be continuity of use with the Old English.
Now historical.
A medicinal drink or syrup made of vinegar and honey, sometimes with other ingredients. oxymel of squills n. oxymel made with bulbs of the squill, Drimia maritima.
