Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French oxycodone.
Etymology: < French oxycodone (R. Hazard & J. Delga 1952, in Arch. Internat. de pharmacodynamie et therapie 90 116), shortened < oxycodéinone (1950 or earlier: see also note below) < German Oxycodeinon (M. Freund & E. Speyer 1916, in Jrnl. f. Prakt. Chem. 94 135) < oxy- oxy- comb. form2 + Codein codeine n. + -on -one suffix, elements of the systematic name.Compare:1917 Chem. Abstr. 11 3384 In the prepn. of a dihydro deriv. of oxycodeinone.., the oxidation product of thebaine, so called (oxycodeinone)..is treated with a reducing agent.
Pharmacology.
A synthetic analgesic opioid related to codeine and thebaine; (5α)-4,5-epoxy-14-hydroxy-17-methylmorphinan-6-one, C18H21NO4.A proprietary name for this drug is OxyContin n.
