Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: acantho- comb. form, -pterous comb. form.
Etymology: < acantho- comb. form + -pterous comb. form. In sense 1 after scientific Latin Acanthoptera, order name (P. A. Latreille in Cuvier Règne animal (ed. 2, 1829) V. 114). Compare scientific Latin acanthopterus (1816 as a specific name (of a mollusc)). Compare earlier acanthopterygian adj., acanthopterygious adj.
Zoology.
1. Of a fish: spiny-finned; = acanthopterygious adj. Now disused.
