Etymology: < post-classical Latin oxybaphon a measure of capacity (4th or 5th cent.; also oxybaphus , 6th cent.) and its etymon ancient Greek ὀξύβαϕον vinegar-saucer, measure of capacity < ὀξυ- oxy- comb. form1 + βαϕ- , stem of βάπτειν to dip (see baptize v.).With sense 2 compare German Oxybaphon (1848 in the passage translated in quot. 1850 at sense 2).
1. Greek History. A measure of capacity, varying from place to place in the ancient world, but usually approximately equal to 2 to 2.5 fluid ounces (60–70 ml). Cf. acetabulum n. 1(b).
