1896 Nature 2 Jan. 197 I first heard the Barisal Guns in December 1871, on my way to Assam from Calcutta through the Sunderbans.
1902 Encycl. Brit. XXVI. 147/2 Barisal has given its name to a curious physical phenomenon, known as the ‘Barisal guns’, the cause of which has not yet been satisfactorily explained. These are noises, like the report of cannon, frequently heard in the channels of the delta of the Brahmaputra.
1936 Discovery Aug. 252/2 Mysterious booming sounds, like distant gunfire, which may be heard in the Australian desert and suitable places all over the world. In Australia they are known as Barisal guns, probably because so many white men from India retire over here.
