Etymology: < French †oxidule (1813 or earlier), oxydule lowest degree of oxidation, protoxide (1824) < †oxide , oxyde oxide n. + -ule -ule suffix, after acidule , noun (1799 or earlier; 1747 as adjective: see acidulous adj.) and perhaps also oxidulé (see oxidulated adj.). Compare Swedish oxidul (1810 in Berzelius). Compare earlier oxidulated adj.With the variation in form compare also oxide n. and discussion at that entry.
Obsolete.
An oxide containing a smaller proportion of oxygen than another compound.
