Etymology: < pain v. + -ed suffix1. Compare Anglo-Norman pené afflicted, tormented (early 13th cent. or earlier) and Old French pené tired out, exhausted (c1160). Compare earlier unpained adj. N.E.D. (1904) also gives the pronunciation (pēi·nėd) /ˈpeɪnɪd/.
