Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi pahāṛī.
Etymology: < Hindi (and other local vernaculars) pahāṛī of or from the hills, native or inhabitant of the hills < pahāṛ mountain area (compare Bengali pāhāṛ ) + Hindi , suffix forming adjectives and derived nouns. Compare earlier Paharia n. and adj.

1. In South Asia: a person from the hills; spec. a member of any of a number of peoples inhabiting the Himalayan regions of Nepal and northern India. Cf. Paharia n. 1.Now technically restricted to peoples of Indo-Aryan origin.
