Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French pedelyun, pé de lyoun, pé de lyon, pas de lion.
Etymology: In α. forms < Anglo-Norman pedelyun (c1300 or earlier), Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French pé de lyoun (c1340), Middle French pé de lyon, pié de lion, pied de lion (15th cent.; French pied de lion ), denoting various plants, especially the lady's mantle and (in modern French) the edelweiss < pied foot (see pied-à-terre n.) + de de prep. + lion lion n. In β. forms probably < Middle French, French pas de lion lady's mantle (though this is first attested slightly later: 1611 in Cotgrave) < Middle French, French pas foot, paw (see pace n.1) + de de prep. + lion lion n. In γ. forms < Middle French patte de lion (French patte de lion ) lady's mantle (1579), Christmas rose (1611 in Cotgrave) < patte patte n. + de de prep. + lion lion n. Compare post-classical Latin pes leonis (from c1000 in British sources). Compare dandelion n.

Any of several plants having leaves or other parts supposed to resemble clawed feet; esp. (a) lady's mantle, Alchemilla vulgaris; (b) the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger.
