Chemistry.

Any of a class of compounds whose molecules contain a ring of one oxygen atom, one nitrogen, and three carbon atoms, with the oxygen and nitrogen atoms separated by one carbon atom; spec. the monocyclic parent compound, C₃H₃NO, a volatile liquid.Strictly, these compounds are distinguished as 1,3-oxazoles, the name oxazole being applied also to derivatives of the isomeric compound with the oxygen and nitrogen atoms adjacent (1,2-oxazole); however, the latter is usually called isoxazole.
