Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pachomètre.
Etymology: < French pachomètre (P. M. N. Benoît 1824, in Ann. de l'industrie nationale 14 145) < ancient Greek πάχος thickness or παχύς thick (see pachy- comb. form) + French -omètre -ometer comb. form.R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857) gives a Latin form pachometrum.
Any of various instruments used to measure thickness, originally of the glass of mirrors, but later also of paper, concrete, etc.; (Ophthalmology) an instrument for measuring the thickness of the cornea of the eye, typically using either light from a slit lamp or ultrasound. Also called pachymeter.
