Etymology: < German Pachnolith (A. Knop 1863, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 127 64) < ancient Greek πάχνη hoar frost ( < the base of πηγνύναι to fix, make solid (see pectic adj.) + suffix forming nouns) + German -lith -lite comb. form¹.

Mineralogy.

A hydrated fluoride of aluminium, calcium, and sodium, NaCaAlF₆·H₂O, occurring as small white monoclinic crystals on cryolite.
