Etymology: < ox n. + horn n. In sense 2 probably after scientific Latin buceras, specific epithet (Linnaeus Systema Naturae (ed. 10, 1759) II.1025, apparently after earlier use as genus name in H. Sloane Catal. Plantarum in Jamaica (1696); compare quot. 1756 at sense 2) < ancient Greek βοῦς ox (cognate with beef n.) + κέρας horn (see kerato- comb. form).For Old English genitive compounds in oxan- see discussion at ox n.
1. The horn of an ox; the material of which this is composed. Also: something resembling an ox's horn in shape.Such horns were formerly frequently used as containers for liquid, powder, etc.

Compounds

ox-horn cockle n. Obsolete rare the heart cockle, Glossus humanus, which has the beaks or umbones of the shell elongated and curved like horns (cf. ox-heart n. 3).Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
