Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ox n., eyed adj.
Etymology: < ox n. + eyed adj. In sense 1 after ancient Greek βοῶπις (see boopic adj.).
1. literary. Having eyes resembling those of an ox; esp. having large round or protuberant eyes.In early use esp. as an epithet of Hera or Juno (after Homer).
