Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French palpitant; Latin palpitant-, palpitāns, palpitāre.
Etymology: Either < French palpitant (1519 in Middle French), use as adjective of present participle of palpiter (see palpitate v.), or < classical Latin palpitant-, palpitāns, present participle of palpitāre palpitate v.; compare -ant suffix1.
= palpitating adj.
