Etymology: < classical Latin palpāt-, past participial stem of palpāre palp v.1 + -ory suffix2, in early use after German palpatorisch (M. A. Wintrich in R. Virchow Handbuch d. speciellen Pathologie u. Therapie (1854) V. i. 62). Compare post-classical Latin palpatorius flattering (1279 in a British source), tentative (1620 in a British source).
