单词 paca
释义

pacan.

Brit. /ˈpɑːkə/, /ˈpakə/, U.S. /ˈpɑkə/, /ˈpækə/
Origin: A borrowing from Tupi. Etymon: Tupi paca.
Etymology: Ultimately < Tupi paca, paka. The immediate language (or languages) of borrowing into English is unclear: compare Portuguese paca (a1576), Spanish paca (1601), French paca (1622; 1603 in an isolated attestation in a text translated from Latin; also 1614 as †pac), post-classical Latin paca (1589 or earlier).Compare the following earlier isolated attestation of the forms pag , pague in the same sense, both < Middle French pag , pague (1578 in the passage translated in quot. 1625), themselves probably a loan (perhaps via Portuguese pagua (1587 or earlier)) of Guarani paig:1625 S. Purchas Pilgrimes 1326 Pag, or Pague (for after what manner they pronounce it, you can scarce, or not at all understand) is a wilde beast of the indifferent height of an Hound.
Either of two large nocturnal rodents related to the agoutis, having dark brown fur with rows of whitish spots along the sides, and constituting the genus Cuniculus, native to Central and South America and widely hunted for food; esp. C. paca (formerly also called spotted cavy or water hare). The pacas are sometimes regarded as a subfamily of the agouti family Dasyproctidae, and sometimes placed in a distinct family Agoutidae. Despite the Latin genus name, the paca is not usually called ‘agouti’ in English.
