Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori .
Etymology: < Maori stockade, fortified place.In the 18th and early 19th cent. also found in quots. recording Maori usage, in forms heppa(h), hippa(h), eppah, etc. misinterpreting the prefixed Maori indefinite article he as part of the noun.
