Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: own adj., -hood suffix.
Etymology: < own adj. + -hood suffix, after German Eigenheit peculiarity (compare ownhead n.), used by J. Behmen (alias J. Boehme) in sense ‘selfhood’ (a1624 in the passage translated in quot. 1649). Compare selfhood n.
Now rare.
The condition of considering oneself, one's will, etc., as one's own or at one's own disposal. Also: that which constitutes one's own self or individuality; selfhood.
