Etymology: < post-classical Latin ovulum (1684 or earlier in sense 1a) < classical Latin ōvum ovum n. + -ulum -ule suffix. Compare post-classical Latin ovulum ovum or ovule of a fish or a mammal (a1200 in British sources). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (ōu·viulɒ̆m) /ˈəʊvjuːləm/.

An old author, Naboth, took them for ova and for this reason these small bodies are sometimes designated by the name of Ovula of Naboth.
