1879 tr. E. Haeckel Evol. Man I. 37 The Ovulists (Ovists) or Believers in Eggs..maintained that the egg was the real animal germ, and that the seminal animalcules..only gave the impulse which caused the unfolding of the egg in which all generations were encased one in the other.
1887 Amer. Naturalist 21 25 So arose the schools of the ovulists, who saw in the spermatozoon a fertilizing element of the ovum, and the spermatists, who thought the ovum or the uterus to be a nidus where the spermatozoon was nourished and developed.
1959 A. Schierbeek Measuring Invisible World iv. 85 The earlier preformationists were all ‘ovulists’, thinking the egg contained the seat of the germ.
1994 M. C. Inhorn Quest for Conception iii. 63 Alexander Hamilton, one such ovulist, declared in 1781 that the child existed in the ovaries and was only excited into life by the ‘seminal worms’.
