The region of the upper atmosphere, at an altitude of 10 to 50 km (6 to 30 miles), which contains a relatively high concentration of ozone and which absorbs much of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun; esp. the region of maximum ozone concentration at an altitude of about 20 to 25 km (12 to 15 miles).In non-technical use now frequently called the ozone layer.
