单词 oysterloit
释义

oysterloitn.

Forms: 1500s–1600s oysterloit, 1500s–1600s oysterloite, 1500s–1600s oysterloyte, 1700s oisterich.
Origin: Either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Aristolochia n.; Latin aristolochia.
Etymology: Ultimately a variant (apparently with assimilation of the first element to oyster n.) of Aristolochia n. or its etymon classical Latin aristolochia (for application to bistort compare quot. 1548 at astrologia n.; both plants were credited with the ability to encourage conception and delivery), perhaps (with misreading of c as t in the German or Dutch forms) via early modern German osterluzei (1482 as osterluci ) or early modern Dutch oosterlucie (earliest in mid 16th cent. in Dodoens as oosterlucey ; compare quot. 1578), which both apparently show folk-etymological alteration (and which are apparently reflected in English ofter luci in 1548 W. Turner Names of Herbes (1881) 15).19th-cent. editions of Culpeper and other plant name dictionaries also list forms osteriacks, osterick, ostericks, ostrich.
Obsolete.
The plant bistort, Persicaria bistorta.
