单词 overhie
释义

overhiev.

Brit. /əʊvəˈhʌɪ/, U.S. /ˌoʊvərˈhaɪ/, Scottish English /ovərˈhaɪ/
Inflections: Past tense and past participle overhied;
Forms: see over- prefix and hie v.1; also 1600s over-eyd (past tense), 1600s overye.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: over- prefix, hie v.1
Etymology: < over- prefix + hie v.1The following example is sometimes cited as an apparent antedating of this word in Old English (in sense ‘to get the better of, overpower’):OE Beowulf 2766 Sinc eaðe mæg, gold on grunde gumcynnes gehwone oferhigian. However, Old English oferhīgian (otherwise unattested), as a verb of motion, would be very unlikely to have gold on grunde as its subject; the word is perhaps better explained as a scribal error for oferhidgian, itself a scrambling of oferhigdian (oferhygdian) in the unattested sense ‘to make proud’ (see L. L. Schücking's 1931 edition of Beowulf).
Now Scottish and English regional (northern) and rare.
