Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ovato-, ōvātus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ovato-, combining form of classical Latin ōvātus ovate adj., forming compound adjectives in scientific (chiefly botanical) Latin: see -o- connective.Attested in a small number of formations listed below, many of which are adaptations of Latin compound adjectives (e.g. ovato-acuminatus , ovato-conicus , ovato-oblongus , etc.). These are more usually rendered in English by compounds in ovate- (see ovate adj. Compounds 1).
Chiefly Biology (esp. Botany). Now rare.
Prefixed to adjectives to form adjectives describing forms which are intermediate between, or a blend of, ovate and another form (cf. ovate adj. Compounds 1, ovately adv.).
