Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Oviraptor.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Oviraptor, genus name (see quot. 1924) < classical Latin ōvi- ovi- comb. form1 + raptor (see raptor n.), in allusion to its discoverer's supposition that it fed on the eggs of other dinosaurs.
Palaeontology.
A genus of bipedal theropod dinosaurs of the late Cretaceous period, having a toothless jaw and long forelimbs with clawed fingers; a dinosaur of this genus.Although Osborn (see quot. 1924) supposed the animal to have been preying on the eggs with which it was found, later research has suggested that they were probably its own.

1924 H. F. Osborn in Amer. Mus. Novitates No. 144. 1 The third..is a short skull, entirely toothless like the Ornithomimidæ, which was found lying directly over a nest of dinosaur eggs, separated only by four inches of friable sandstone; hence we name it Oviraptor, the ‘egg seizer’.
1959 R. C. Andrews All About Dinosaurs 100 He exposed the skeleton of a small dinosaur! It was only two or three feet long and had no teeth. Later Professor Osborn found it to be a new kind of dinosaur. He named it Oviraptor.
1994 N.Y. Times 5 Apr. c9/1 Another important dinosaur discovery was the complete skeleton of an Oviraptor, about five feet long.
