Etymology: < scientific Latin Ovis, genus name of the sheep ( < classical Latin ovis : see ovi- comb. form2) + Capra, genus name of the goat ( < classical Latin capra she-goat: see capriole n.) + -id suffix3. Compare caprid adj., ovicaprine n., ovicaprine adj.
Chiefly Archaeology.

A sheep or a goat.Since the bones of sheep and goats are not easily distinguished, they are often treated together by archaeologists.

1983 P. Bahn in C. Scarre Anc. France vii. 192 The most important feature is the appearance in layer 8 (mid-6th millennium bc) of apparently domestic ovicaprids.
