Etymology: Originally cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch uteliggen (Dutch uitliggen ), Middle Low German ūtliggen , Middle High German ūzligen (German ausliegen ) < the Germanic base of out- prefix + the Germanic base of lie v.1 In later use independently re-formed < out- prefix + lie v.1; compare outlier n.
