1875 E. H. Knight Amer. Mech. Dict. II. 1582/1 Outkeeper, a small dial-plate having an index turned by a milled head underneath, used with the surveyor's compass to keep tally in chaining. The dial is figured from 0 to 16, the index being moved one notch for every chain run.
