Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps either < over- prefix + reeve v.1, or < over- prefix + reeve v.3 Compare slightly earlier over-reaving n. O.E.D.Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (ōuvəɹˌrī·v) /əʊvəˈriːv/.
Prosody. Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To scan (verse) using a metrical scheme based on a complete stanza rather than on individual lines, so that there is no break in the rhythm between one line and the next.A term used by Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–89) to describe a method for scanning verse used in his poetry. See also sprung rhythm n. 1.
