Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ovant-, ovāns, ovāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin ovant-, ovāns, present participle of ovāre to celebrate an ovation, probably < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek εὐάζειν to rejoice, εὐοῖ , cry of exultation (see evoe int.). Compare Italian ovante (14th cent.). Compare earlier oval adj.1 and slightly later ovatic adj.1
Obsolete.
Celebrating an ovation; triumphing in or as in an ovation; of the nature of an ovation.
