Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ouvrier.
Etymology: < French ouvrier worker (12th cent. in Old French as ovrer , uvrier ) < classical Latin operārius labourer, use as noun of masculine singular of operārius used in work or labouring (see operary adj.). Compare slightly later ouvrière n.
In France and other French-speaking countries: a manual or industrial worker; a labourer; a (male) member of the working classes. Cf. ouvrière n.
